A Brief History of Traditional Tattoos

The traditional tattoo style as we know it today first started to take shape on the bodies of sailors in the 18th-20th centuries. During this period, it spread all around the globe, becoming one of the largest artistic movements in history, but its beginnings go way further back.

To fully understand Neo-Traditional tattoos, we have to turn back to its roots and main influences, which is the Art Nouveau, the most well-known art trend during the 1890s. This style is heavily influenced by Eastern art, especially Japanese art, which was being exhibited in Europe during that point in time.

The existence of blackwork tattoos dates back to the very beginning of the thousands-year-old tattoo tradition. Originally, all-black body art was employed by ancient Polynesian tribes as a way to communicate their identities (including social standing and lineage) as well as their religious beliefs and ideas of warfare.
